November 10th - Practicing animation and game design
The animation you see here is based on a little joke I've made about Yautja / Predator flicking their braids like a person would flick their hair with their hands. It is one of those simple storyboard animations without any details or additions. When I make storyboard animations, I focus on the character anatomy and how characters would be posing / dynamically moving. (Not as much on armor and clothing which would be added in details)
Continuing from the previous announcement. Since I've been asked, I'm working on drawing out more plans for the Demons of Carinia game and the concepts that I have for the enemies that I would like to add to the game in a similar fashion as I've done for the Hexagon game. I will update the Demons of Carinia game page when I get the opportunity to share some of these ideas.
I am practicing storyboard animation for Kane Project part 1 in the meantime, and I will hope to get more videos regarding it very soon.
The current homepage's title that you see above is a beta title that I'll be using temporarily to decide how I want to have the logo and title finalized as. I'm open to constructive criticism and suggestions on how to improve it before moving to a more refined stage in the drawing process. Google sites doesn't really allow pagination for announcements do they?
September 26th - Changing Plans!
I've made significant progress on the hexagon game. I've created the base game mode which included random hexagon tile generation (After refining the tile generation 5 times!) and had made headway into the second game type allowing border tiles and blank tiles. It still needed significant refinement. Sadly, while I was working on this the company Unity had decided to make significant and shady changes to their billing and determining how much developers would owe them for involving installations of games using their game engine. ...As a result I have decided to step away from Unity programming and I will be considering other game engines such as Unreal Engine 5 and Godot. Porting what I have is going to be a chore, but I believe the end results will be worth it. Sorry about the delay on this.
Furthermore, I will be resuming animating the Part 1 storyboard of Kane Project while I learn another game engine. I still need to complete the script for part 3. I've been thinking heavily about how I want to continue the story after part 2, and I have thought of some good ideas. I will make sure to post the script in the future.
...And I won 3rd place for the non-programming game jam of Terragon Gaming! Also... Please enjoy a sketch of my planned robot mascot on a black canvas. I am planning on painting a heavily shaded portrait of the character. I plan on adding him and an updated logo to this website in the future.
August 21st - Game Jams
Well after some hiatus I went to GenCon 2023 and met a start up company by the name of Terragon Gaming. They've been selling magnetic hexagon tiles and have been giving out rule sets for their hexagon tiles in a game. They even announced a non-programming game jam that focused on providing another game based on the best original rule sets using their tiles. With the hexagon game I was currently working on I figured this was right up my alley.
Guess what? There's another game jam by Brackeys, and the theme of it was 'Diving Deeper'. The other video game (that's currently on a temporary hiatus) the Demons of Carinia has a mechanic that would go perfectly with this theme. I may or may not make it ocean themed, painting themed, or dream themed... It just depends on what I think would work best for this Game Jam.
Yadda yadda drawing on my own and have things to show, blah blah animation.
May 29th - Hexagon Game Cont.
I have made some progress in creating the hexagon game. (I still haven't thought of a good name for it yet) Some of the progress I've made has been documented and can be found in the Hexagon Game Page. Since this is a game with a much simpler scope than The Demons of Carinia I feel like I can get this done at a much quicker pace. Plus, I feel like what I've gone through has helped me consider better game design techniques.
I hope to get a fully working form of this game available as soon as possible. I will have some major life decisions coming up this next month so that will once again slow down my progress.
I am still continuing practice of animation and sketching on the side. I will continue to make announcements when I am able to make them. …I really should make a roadmap for the hexagon game as well...
May 8th - Hexagon Game
In an effort to learn more programming on the side I've decided to create a game from a concept that I've thought of rather recently. I've decided to work on this game because I would like to join a game jam sometime this year, although I realize I keep running into programming roadblocks. I've written the concept for the game here if you're curious as to what the game is and how it is supposed to function. Right now the name 'Hexagon Game' is just a working title. I am challenging myself to get a simple game done in the least amount of time possible.
While that has been going on I've picked up Clip Studio Paint 2 and continued to practice artistry. This includes painting and more sketches that I have done that aren't related to my games or animation. I will upload them onto a separate page here.
I am continuing practice of animation on the side. While my announcements have been extremely slow, I am still balancing out life obligations and goals that I'm trying to complete. I know that it is slow, and I would like to continue picking up where I left off. If there's one thing I've learned from my friends it's that the best thing to do for a project is to complete it. I will also be updating this site as well for minor improvements all around.
February 26th - Some animation
Welll... I haven't gotten as far as I've liked when it comes to animating the first part thus far. I wanted to add more details, movement, and timing. I suppose that's the issue with failing to get around to work for projects. Then again, it's a learning process and I am learning about splicing scenes (and images) together. I will work on the quality of my work more.
On the other hand, I've started writing of part 3 of the script. I've toyed around with some ideas and bullet points, but I've finally started to settle on the story. I've challeneged myself to add a set of conflict between every part. I'm more interested in a story which has logical conflict based on character's motivations, so we aren't going to see the demons in this part, but their actions will be clearly felt as we continue. When I post the current progress on part 3, you can find it on the Kane Project Roadmap page.
Still working on concept art for larger scenes. These will only be focused on part 1, which is in a more medieval setting. Part 2 and 3 currently focus on more modern times. I have intentions of focusing on the past in some of the later parts but we'll get to that when we get to that.
February 20th - More concept art
I finished the first reference for my robot mascot! You can take a look at what I have in the Mascot page. I will continue to create more artwork for the character and include more than just the front side, maybe include some action poses as well.
I am currently working on the storyboard animation. Specifically where the party in part 1 comes to a close. I realize how daunting of a task this is going to be due to ALL of the characters that are supposed to be in a single scene. For context, I am referring to a part where an insectoid prince addresses numerous party goers in a single scene. I'm working on it and I hope to be done with it by the weeks end.
I am also working on other concept art and practicing drawing to make more complex scenes. As you can see from my art some of the proportions of some of the faces and characters I have made can sometimes be a little... 'off'. Sure anyone can contribute this to an artstyle but I am always looking to improve.
January 25th - Working on Mascot
I am working on a reference of the robot mascot at the moment. The original concept was based off of just random ideas that I've looked into. I once met an artist at GenCon by the name of Dan Scott and asked him to make a token card based off of one of my favorite concepts that I made. I received the card and I've been using it as a bit of a reference plus I've been using some random AI art of robot bodies as inspiration for the rest of the portrait.
I hope to get this done along with a colored version of it complete. ... Maybe down the road I will order more commissions of the mascot and other characters that I've drawn. I will be reworking the Mascot page soon, so feel free to take a look at it before I remove some of the less detailed artwork from it.
I am continuing to work on animations one step at a time. Currently, I am animating the storyboard of the insect king, insect prince, and a grand hall involving many characters. I hope to get a video on this out when I get the chance. I still have a lot to learn with Clip Studio Paint and will continue practicing animation. ... baby steps!
January 19th - Animations!
That's right! I'm working on animations! Feel free to see what I've done so far in the Kane Project Roadmap page. So far I am working on the storyboard for Kane Project part 1. The story currently focuses on a fantasy world in which dragonoids, insectoids, and reptilians are being invaded by demons who are attempting to rule over them.
I will be posting more regular updates. My goal is to have a short sequence available each week.
I'll hold of on programming the game The Demons of Carinia until my schedule becomes a little more unbooked. I'm already making some headway into animation.
January 2nd - Happy New Year!
Hello all! Happy new year. Glad to leave 2022 behind what with all of the crazy politics and depressing whatnot. There are a few personal new years resolutions that I hope to complete besides the usual, get fit and strong stuff.
1) I would like to complete the storyboard animation for the first part of my animation: Kane Project. I would love to make something that truely captures the imagination of an alien world in which dragon people and insect people reside in. I have ideas, but I should probably post those ideas that I have in these website pages.
2) I want to complete a playable demo for my game The Demons of Carinia. This would mean completing save files, completing basic enemy behavior, playing with audio cues, and creating artwork for the game. I don't have many ideas for the story YET, but I hope to work on that as the year goes on.
3) Continue to grow in skill when it comes to developing artwork instead of relying so much on AI art like I do for these banners and announcements. I admit AI art is fun, but I should try doing better myself as well.
I'll be updating this website more regularly. This will include the newer art that I've scanned in and my attempts at animation. Ditto for the game as well. I'll be looking around to commission of my characters and the robot mascot for this website. Trying to find people who draw dragon people have caused me to find some WEIRD stuff. But I digress, I'll be placing the mascot and updated title for this website on the homepage at a later date.
November 6th - Reworking stuff
There's not much to say this update since I've been busy. The holidays are coming up and I'm sure to start using vacation time to be more productive or just taking days off to rest. I'm reworking on the title for this website. You may have noticed that part of the smokey light protruding from the text is getting cut off. This is another limitation when using Google Sites. I'm redrawing the whole title in vector graphics so I can resize it easily.
Mascot-wise I've played with AI art and have some great images to share. Although I'll admit it took quite a few tries before I got a series of pictures that matched what I was thinking.
I'm working on the best practices for storyboarding. I'm working on the set up for Kane Project Part 1.
Also, I am working on the save system and code structure for the Demons of Carinia.
October 10th - Back into the grind
I'm getting back into programming, and I've been doing more sketching. I've added to this website. I still have a lot to work on. I am going to rework the title art of this website, and I will continue to play with AI art to get banners for this webpage as well as inspiration for art.
I have updated the current videos to drop hints of these things in my video diary for the game the Demons of Carinia. This sketch appears at the end of the video. I'll be updating the roadmap for it as well since I still haven't gotten to that.
On another note I will be working on the storyboarding for Kane Project soon. I am more comfortable with my sketching skills. Though I still want to draw better, I realize that by simply attempting to be a perfectionist may mean that I get no where in my animations. I'll be making a video diary about Kane Project as well. It will be unlisted but available for all to see.
I will still continue to practice artwork in the meantime.
October 2nd - Playing with AI art
Well this has been a long time coming. I've been busy with prior obligations with friends and family. I haven't been to motivated to work on the story board for Kane Project or the game Demons of Carinia since I haven't really had time for myself recently. I will resume this soon enough. I want to at least have the storyboard finished or the main mechanics of the game created by the end of the year.
However, recently I was made aware that Stable Diffusion was open source and allowed people to make A.I. generated art based on user prompts and a given model library. I was able to get it set up on my computer. It kills my gpu, and most of the images it comes up with can be stinkers... BUT there are some great pieces of artwork that come from it. I've replaced some banners on this website with the really good ones. Some of which give so much inspiration.
While I've been playing with Stable Diffusion I accidentally came up with an idea for a game involving robots in a bleak devastated world. I'll write up the game pitch and come up with the mechanics for that game. However, I will not start work on it until I can get the Demons of Carinia completed.
I am still practicing artwork. I will get back into game design and storyboard artwork. I want to get one of these done before the end of the year. Better hop to it!
August 29th - Travelling and Artwork
I've changed the theme of the website to match that of a more softer color scheme. I'll keep the color scheme for now since I am unable to add a dark theme to the website. (Still holding out for a dark theme! ... and I may be saying this a lot.)
I'm still practicing artwork although I realize I haven't posted anything to the pages in a while now. Motivation is sometimes difficult to keep up sometimes, plus it's weird trying to switch between drawing on paper with pens to drawing on a tablet.
For now I'll focus on more cartoony artwork since that's currently what I'm good at thus far. I'm still deciding on that robot mascot that'll appear at the top of this website. Stay tuned! ... Hopefully I'll be a bit faster this time around. I'll add the above picture to the gallery once it's completed.
I will expand the type of artwork I do and create header artwork soon as well.
July 7th - Comments & Pages added
More has been added to the website! Comments are now available and can be left at any of the pages for artistry or a couple of roadmaps. Unfortunately, Google Sites does not have the built-in functionality for comments so I had to add a third party called Disqus. Turns out the last comment I can find on this while searching google was from 2019. I'll replace Disqus once Google adds chat functionality.
I welcome criticisms and suggestions, but if people start abusing it or if I see bots I will disable comments in the future... so everybody play nice.
As an extra note, roadmaps have been added to. It is now possible to see the Kane Project scripts for part 1 and part 2. An announcement archive page has been created with the current announcements. I'll cap the number of announcements at the home page to 3. You can find the rest there if you're curious.
I'm practicing more art and programming behind the scenes. So stay tuned! Now to see if Google Sites had some dark theme functionality...
June 26th - (Still) Working on art
I'm currently working on the art for this webpage. There's a lot of stuff to get done, and even then I realize I still have a lot to learn when it comes to drawing. I have a lot to practice on top of that. I'm still not satisfied with the title at the top of this page, and I would like to make it look more environmental and showcase a robotic world.
If you're curious as to how I draw stuff I am currently practicing my work on Clip Studio Paint. Most of my drawings in the past have been sketches with pens.
I would like to apologize before hand if my work tends to be slow. I have currently spread myself thin on projects, prior obligations, and the desperate need to catch up on sleep.
As a side note. I am currently working on learning how to program better and more efficiently. The two major projects that will require such programming are the game and the website itself. As good as Google Sites can be to get basic things in there are still a lot of extra quality-of-life improvements left to be desired. Simple things like tables require embedding. Game-wise I still have a lot to learn with interfaces.
First Post - Site under construction
Hello. Looks like you're here far earlier than what I expected. Currently, this site is under construction, and I'm working on showcasing my projects here. These projects will include both artistry and programming.
As a fun fact to begin with, this name RoberttoRobotto was a fun little name that was given to me from friends. I liked it enough to incorporate it to my 'branding', so to say. While I don't normally draw robots, I may consider making one as a mascot for my webpage. Time will tell.
Feel free to look at the artwork that I've made in this website. I've included artwork both new and old. I did not include all of my art pieces, as when I usually draw there are bound to be a few stinkers before I really draw something I'm proud of.
I'll also be adding information on the projects I'm working on and will add more art and themes to match how I want this website to look.
